I went to the doctor today. A recent chest x-ray showed my
heart to be enlarged so my general practitioner suggested that next time I was
in we could have a talk about it. As that was nearly three months ago and I
have no other health problems currently, I decided to go and have a chat
anyway.
Well it turns out that it is only very slightly bigger than
it should be and nothing to worry about. We talked about how much exercise I am
getting (currently three and a half kilometres six days a week around the local
park), my diet (one treat day when I eat far too much otherwise not bad),
medications (only one regular tablet) and my blood pressure (normal). I also
have no symptoms to worry about.
However, that wasn’t enough. He pulled up an internet site
with other suggestions for people in the seventy to eighty year range groups to
keep fit, maintain mobility and prevent falls. These included hill walks (not
happening!), lifting weights and a raft of other measures. I am generally
active quite apart from my daily walks but will have a think about what else I
can incorporate into my very busy days. We did discuss attending a gym and I
had been thinking about possibly half an hour three times a week, which he said
would be quite appropriate. That time frame is probably all I can fit into my schedule.
It has made me wonder if I put as much time into my
spiritual health as I do with my physical. I do spend time daily studying my
Bible, I do spend time praying daily (both scheduled times and throughout the
day), I meet weekly with a group for a Bible study, I attend church on Sundays.
It sounds good, but is it changing me for the better? Do I need to schedule
even more time to study the Bible and pray? Do I need to do more in a group
situation? Truthfully, we can probably never spend enough time with God but are
we spending enough time to see the outworking of the Holy Spirit? Are we
becoming more obedient to God, are people commenting on our growth or our
kindness to others? Are we witnessing to others in order to do everything we
can in this life to ensure those we run across during our day know about sin
and salvation? Those are the challenges I am currently agitating over. Do you
have the same challenges? Are you a different
person? Do your thoughts, words and actions show the working of the Holy Spirit
in your life? What’s your spiritual health like?
God bless you each as you seek to do His will.
