To buy or not to buy?

Today, as the renovations move forward ever so slowly, we decided to have a look at lounge suites. Apparently it can take up to three months to deliver on style and colour, as many of them are made to order.

Currently, we are waiting on the price of GIB stopping, we have accepted a quote for the carpet and vinyl, paid a deposit and booked a date (dependant on when the kitchen is installed). We are waiting on some more work by the electrician and builders and I am about to email the project manager to give him a little push. Then it could be some time before the painter gets to us. I am also about to accept a quote for the wallpapering which will also happen after the kitchen is installed. The kitchen has been finalised and will be around ten weeks to completion. So still lots of waiting for things to happen. In the meantime, we are tucked into one tiny room with a heater and a television. Cosy aye?

So, back to today and our quest for lounge suites. We visited three furniture stores this morning. One was immediately crossed off the list. It stocks clearance furniture only, meaning that furniture may be returns or end of line. Unfortunately, as we walked around the warehouse most of the furniture was dirty, dusty or scruffy which completely put us off buying. I felt sad as I observed staff chatting to each other or wandering around aimlessly. A quick tidy and vacuum would have made the furniture look so much more appealing. It reminded me that Scripture tells us that if we are not prepared to work, then we will live in poverty (Proverbs 13:4).  It also tells us that God honours those who work with all their hearts in whatever they do (Colossians 3:23-24). In fact, scripture has much to say about working even if Solomon did find work grievous and couldn’t see the point of it!

I did discover an interesting fact! Most modern lounge suites are made for people who have long legs, especial from the hip to the knee. As I am a little shorty, the seats were too wide for me to sit comfortably. This meant no support for my back and my feet didn’t always touch the ground. There also appears to be a greater percentage of corner suites which will not work with our lounge, than stand-alone two or three seaters. So an interesting morning’s shopping.

However, we did spot some that have potential and I will be doing some googling to see what else is available.

We are so blessed in God’s provision and we will always trust God to provide for us (Philippians 4:19). My husband and I both worked hard all our lives. In fact my husband was made redundant due to restructuring three times over his working life, and each time became busy at finding another job quickly. My parents also worked very hard and it is through their hard work that we have been so gloriously blessed to be able to do renovations. They have both gone now but are remembered with much love.

Let me encourage you to work hard, handle your finances wisely and trust totally in God. He loves to bless his people.

Taking Time Out

I had the privilege this week of attending a retreat with five other women. The retreat was over three days but unfortunately some of the nine women who intended to go, were unable to as other urgent commitments came up and needed to be kept. So it became a bit different than expected. Six of us attended the first day, but two of us could only go for the day. Another two were going out the following day for the rest of the retreat. Unfortunately one of our ladies became quite sick and to her disappointment missed it all. However, the day I attended was blessed.   The retreat was held at a beach house belonging to one of the group, at an isolated beach about an hours drive away. It was a beautiful sunny day. We deposited our bags and the first thing we did after admiring the view, was to have a cup of tea. This lead to a lovely lazy discussion about all sorts of things, a great introduction to spending time together. Following this we spent about an hour studying and discus...

Friends

I am so blessed to have a circle of really good friends in my life. I am a definite introvert so find it really easy to simply stay home, especially if I have a good book to read. I am an avid reader of Christian fiction. However, I do know that it is better that I have some socialization. Research shows that isolation increases the risk of an early death as well as the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease so obviously I want to avoid that if possible. Research also shows that socialization is good for brain health including making your memory sharper as well as increasing well-being and feelings of belonging. Although as an introvert I find socialization can be a little exhausting, I do enjoy time with my friends and it makes me happy. Introverts tend to have a few very close friends whilst extroverts tend to be friends with everyone and find socialization energizing—strangers are only ‘friends they haven’t yet met’! Now that is of course a very broad generalization, but i...

Planting Seeds

Carrying on from last week, I was wondering how I am sowing seeds. I realised that we can all sow seeds everywhere we go. I don’t go out that often actually, I don’t belong to any secular groups but I can still be responsive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Under his leading I made a determined effort to get to know the names of all the staff at my two favourite cafés that I visit at least weekly. I ask about their families; I support where I can. My friends and I find opportunities to give them all a little gift of chocolate and a card with a verse of scripture written on it. They all know we are Christians. I guess that might be called planting seeds. I converse with the supermarket checkout operators just to have a chance to bring a blessing to them. Some of them now know I am a Christian. I can easily bring God into conversations with unsaved family members, neighbours and strangers I stop and talk to in the park—with the leading of the Holy Spirit. I do not adopt a heavy...
