To buy or not to buy?

Today, as the renovations move forward ever so slowly, we decided to have a look at lounge suites. Apparently it can take up to three months to deliver on style and colour, as many of them are made to order. Currently, we are waiting on the price of GIB stopping, we have accepted a quote for the carpet and vinyl, paid a deposit and booked a date (dependant on when the kitchen is installed). We are waiting on some more work by the electrician and builders and I am about to email the project manager to give him a little push. Then it could be some time before the painter gets to us. I am also about to accept a quote for the wallpapering which will also happen after the kitchen is installed. The kitchen has been finalised and will be around ten weeks to completion. So still lots of waiting for things to happen. In the meantime, we are tucked into one tiny room with a heater and a television. Cosy aye? So, back to today and our quest for lounge suites. We visited three furniture ...

Taking a breath

What a week it’s been! We were told the builders would start Monday, then when the Project Manager and foreman called in at 7.30 am last Friday to go over the plan, they said that since it was raining and they didn’t have many inside jobs currently, the builders would be here in an hour! Gosh, what a rush but exciting too. We removed the last of the furniture, shifted the piano and covered everything up. As we needed to go out later that day, we were told that was fine as the foreman would be giving instructions. We had been very clear about what we were doing, and I had a list for the electricians which I went over with the foreman. When we got home we discovered that either the foreman has a worse memory than me (and that would be unlikely) or his communication wasn’t the best. We found that the electrician had put the new power points in the wrong place in spite of the written instructions. We explained to the builders that they couldn’t put up the GIB on that wall just yet ...

On our way!

Finally, we have builders coming in next week for our renovations. I have a list! I always have a list! I am the list queen! So builders, kitchen firm for final measure, GIB stopping, painting, wallpapering, install kitchen, electrician throughout, carpet and vinyl laying. Phew! Maybe I should pay myself project management fees? We have been shivering through the start of our winter, using a fan heater until we received our electricity bill, which is when we purchased a cheap but more efficient heater. But God is good and we have had some lovely warm sunshine and some days when the heater stays off even in the evening. It’s so exciting that we are actually starting to move on the renovations, even if somewhat daunting. However, God’s got my back. I did seek God before we started work on the renovations, as I wondered about spending our money wisely, even though our kitchen is fifty years old and the wallpaper is peeling off. I want to be wise with our finances and generous to o...

Cast your cares

It’s so good to have some energy back. I’m fully back into my routine and we are visiting the family this weekend for a much needed break from the renovations—or lack of! I have been reflecting on all the events happening currently. Global warming leading to severe weather events, devastating earthquakes, COVID-19 still very present in our communities, the wars in Gaza and Ukraine (not to speak of wars that have been going for many years in other places that we hear nothing about), sex-trafficking and modern day slavery to name a few. Then there is the general unrest and protests in our nation and indeed, in other nations; against the war in Gaza, supporting Israel; against abortion and for abortion; against LBGTQ community and for the LBGTQ community; for unity, against unifying tactics claiming racism; racism against all the various beautiful and rich cultures we have in our country. Then I start thinking about the intimidating tactics of gangs and how they get away with st...
