Where does the time go? I often hear those comments. Is it true that time is going quicker the nearer we get to end times? Even my daughter as a quite young woman once said to me, ‘Mum, time seems to be going quicker every year.’
Is
it just our perception or is time speeding up?
I
had this conversation with a friend over coffee today. How can it almost be the
end of the year when we feel we just got started! We wondered if the advent of
electronics is responsible for time seeming to go quicker. It possibly is—we spend
large chunks of our day flicking from one electronic notification to another.
It is no wonder children have such short attention spans with computers at
school and home, cell phones and television. Everything in handy bite-size
pieces then on to the next one. Oblivious to all that is going on around them,
life passing them by. Thank goodness my grandchildren have limited screen time.
It is hard though when they are given electronic devices to do their homework
on!
Thinking
of this year, Cyclone Gabrielle was a huge event for us but even so it feels
like it has just happened, rather than nearly nine months ago. We are certainly
still recovering from it and have a long way yet to go. It is mid-November and Christmas
is already being advertised on internet and in some stores. Mind you, I love
Christmas including all the trappings so it is never too early for me. I have
read two separate surveys on internet about how soon is too soon to start
decorating for Christmas. On the latest survey which asked the question, ‘Is it
too early to put up your Christmas tree’:
68%
of responders said no sooner than 1 December
19.2%
said never too early
8.9
barely remember to put it up at all (what is wrong with them!)
9%
don’t celebrate Christmas at all (whaaat!)
Well
I do not apologise for loving Christmas and all that goes with it. I must admit
however that as I grow older, I do not have the energy to put up all the
decorations that I used to. However, I decorate a tree beautifully and find
lots of lovely Thomas Kinkaid collectables to decorate various surfaces in my
living areas.
However,
the most important to me is not the decorations or the bustle of Christmas but
the reason for Christmas. My favourite part of Christmas is the hour I spend
once everyone has gone to bed, sitting in the dark with only the tree lights
glowing and meditate on the true meaning of Christmas.
What
an amazing expression of love, that God sent his beloved son to earth as a baby
as part of His redemption plan.
God
bless you all.
